Analysis of location, feedstock availability, and economic impacts of potential mass timber processing facilities in Michigan
Published in Forest Policy and Economics, 2024
Abstract
This study investigates the economic viability of establishing mass timber (specifically Cross-Laminated Timber) manufacturing facilities in Michigan. By utilizing industrial balance sheet analysis and regional economic modeling, we identify high-potential locations based on feedstock availability and existing forest industry infrastructure.
Key Findings
- Strategic Location: Identification of optimal sites for processing facilities to minimize transportation costs and maximize feedstock access.
- Economic Impact: Quantifiable analysis of job creation, labor income, and total value added to Michigan’s bioeconomy.
- Feedstock Analysis: Assessment of Michigan’s timber resources to support long-term sustainable production for mass timber.
